The Bathroom is not everyone’s favorite room in the house especially when it comes to cleaning. Unfortunately cleaning the bathroom is necessary not only to maintain your home, but to maintain your own personal hygiene. Bathrooms face a number of threats such as mildew, grout, mold, bacteria and soap scum. Here are several tips to help you with your bathroom cleaning.
Increase Air Circulation: Mildew and mold can cause damage to your bathroom and can be a threat to your health as well. Increasing air circulation during and after a hot shower will make moisture dry quicker giving mold and mildew less time to grow. We recommend leaving the bathroom fan on during and after use or opening your window if it is a nice day.
Wash your Shower Curtains: Shower curtains are designed to stop water from escaping the shower, but in the process can trap moisture thus creating mold. Shower curtains should be washed on a regular basis to prevent and remove mold build-up.
Clean with a Toothbrush: Toothbrushes are designed for scrapping tough plaque build-up on your teeth, but they also do a great job as a house cleaning tool. They can clean hard to reach areas around the house and are effective at getting food off of dishes. In the bathroom however they are great at cleaning grout and soap scum. Make sure not to use it on soft surfaces as the bristles might leave scratches.
Unclogging Drains: Sinks and showers both have drains and over time hair, dirt and grime can accumulate and clog your drains. Before purchasing expensive drain fluid you can try an old science experiment. Mixing baking soda and vinegar causes a safe chemical reaction that can clean your drain. Start by pouring baking soda down your drain. Next add the vinegar. Let this sit for 15-30 minutes and in the meantime start boiling water. Pour the boiling water down your drain to remove the baking soda and vinegar.
Disinfect: The bathroom has the second highest bacteria count than any other room in the average home. Since the bathrooms are used to expel waste and also maintain personal hygiene disinfecting is important to kill bacteria. You can make a simple green disinfecting solution by creating a half water half vinegar solution. Put the solution in a spray bottle and wipe away with a cloth to disinfect.
