Garage cleaning and organizing can be a huge project. Like any project however having a game plan and sticking to it will save you time and frustration in the long run. Garages become disorganized for the same reasons any other form of storage becomes disorganized, you keep storing items, but you do not remove unnecessary items. Garages also become dirty from motor oil, dirt, moisture and even mold. If you notice mold in garage you should have it professionally removed as it can cause serious health problems. Here are several ways to approach garage cleaning and organizing to save you time and any frustration.
Strategize: Before your jump on in and start talking the daunting task of cleaning out your garage you should formulate a game plan. Break your garage up into different areas and designate areas to move debris and large items. A great place to temporarily move items is your driveway. A driveway is a good open space to layout and identify what items you need and don’t need.
Remove the Unnecessary: While sorting through your items it is important to ask yourself “Does this item serve a purpose and will I use it in the future?” If the answer to either question is “No” than you should consider getting rid of the items to clear up space. Before throwing away junk you should consider donating any items you do not need any more.
Cleaning: Now that you have cleared out your garage you can start cleaning. You should start by dusting, spot cleaning and washing places above your floor. This way any debris that falls onto your garage floor will be removed while you sweep. When sweeping your garage floor you should sweep from the back of your garage to the outside.
Floor Maintenance: Garage floors can become dirty from motor oil, tracked in dirt, mold and mildew. You should consider cement floor cleaning on occasion so that your garage floor does not become stained. To remove motor oil and prevent it from being tracked around your home you can use Seedy Dry or cat litter to absorb the oil. After the oil has been absorbed just dry the area. You can wash your floor with soap and water or hire a professional floor cleaning company who can pressure wash, steam clean and provide protective sealing to keep your cement garage floor clean.
Re-Organize: When your garage is clean and ready to be re organized you should rethink the layout of your garage in order to create more space. You should also consider utilizing wall and ceiling space for storage to create more space. Installing shelves, cabinets and tool benches will keep items from taking up space on the floor and help keep you more organized.
