Ever find yourself cleaning up dust, wondering where it comes and why it keeps building up? Dust in fact, is a build-up of fibers that come from human skin, paper, clothes, upholstery and pets. It is important to reduce dust in your home because it can cause all sorts of health problems including minor issues such as minor congestion and sneezing to more serious problems such as severe allergic reactions. Unfortunately there is no way to eliminate dust entirely, but you can prevent it from building up by using common house cleaning techniques.
- Vacuum: Vacuuming is necessary not only to maintain and clean your carpets and floors, but to reduce dust as well. Anything with fibers will create dust so it is important to vacuum your carpets and upholstery to remove dust particles and loose fibers that create dust. For your upholstery use a suction type vacuum and for your carpets a vacuum with a beater bar is recommended because it will vibrate your carpet and loosen up dust particles.
- Use an extended duster: Hard to reach places such as the tops of ceiling fans, underneath furniture and small cracks are places where dust likes to hide. By using an extended reach duster you can safely and more efficiently remove dust from hard to reach places.
- Increase air circulation: Circulating air in your house is important because if the air is stagnant dust will gather at a much more rapid rate. Opening windows, using an A/C unit or a fan are ways in which you can keep air circulating through your home or office to prevent dust build up. Just be sure to clean any type of air filter on a regular basis.
- Wash your bedding regularly: Since dust is created by skin and fabric fiber your bed is huge source of dust. If you wash your sheets on a regular basis your bedding will be clean and fresh and this will keep your bedroom from gathering dust.
- Wear a mask when cleaning: This won’t prevent dust from building up, but will protect you when you are cleaning. Cleaning can agitate dust particles, which releases them into the air. Using a mask will while cleaning will protect you from the dangerous side effects of dust.
