Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in America and an estimated 100 Million Americans drink coffee on a daily basis. With so many people drinking coffee it is no wonder coffee spills and stains are a common problem. Here are four steps to follow next time you or someone you know accidently spills coffee on their favorite shirt!
Step 1: Act Quickly! When accidents happen there is generally a moment of panic. It is important to act quickly so the stain does not set in. A stain is a discoloration and the longer the coffee has to dry the more difficult it will be to remove in the future.
Step 2: Blot the Stain. Blotting the stain will soak up any excess coffee and will prevent the stain from spreading. Microfiber cloths are highly absorbent and are a great tool to have in your cleaning arsenal in case of an accident. You should never rub the stain however as this will cause the coffee to penetrate deeper into the fibers.
Step 3: Dilute the stain. If you have access to white distilled vinegar fill your sink with cold water and vinegar and let the stain soak. The vinegar will also help clean your sink. If you do not have access to a sink or vinegar a Tide to Go pen or a commercial stain fighter can come in handy.
Step 4: Launder the Clothing. Lastly you will want to put the article of clothing into the wash with your preferred detergent. The detergent will clean deeper into the fibers removing any remaining coffee. If the stain still persists re-launder the item. Note: Sometimes coffee stains can be permanent and the discoloration of the fabric cannot be reversed.
